Welcome to 'COSY : Formula 1 Championship: 1970s'
History
The 1976 Formula One season gave little hint in the early stages that it would become one of the most turbulent, dramatic episodes in even the rich history of Grand Prix racing.
Niki Lauda, the reigning world champion, won four of the first six races in his Ferrari and many predicted he would set a record points total on his way to retaining his title.
James Hunt, the charismatic, eccentric English driver, had landed a plum drive for McLaren and won a tempestuous British Grand Prix despite a first corner crash with Lauda.
The victory was later outlawed and it seemed that Hunt would play a strictly supporting role to Lauda and Ferrari’s greater reliability.
F1 in the 70s was a violently unpredictable sport and eight drivers, including the only posthumous world champion, Jochen Rindt, had lost their lives in the previous five seasons.
The cars often burst into flames on impact and cockpits and protective clothing were primitive compared to today’s standards.
Lauda had complained about safety shortcomings at the Nordschleife and the access difficulties for the emergency services in the event of a crash.
He raced anyway but he crashed on the second lap and his Ferrari burst into flames.
Lauda was trapped in the wreckage until fellow drivers Arturo Merzario, Brett Lunger, Guy Edwards and Harald Ertl dragged him free.
By then, he had sustained severe burns to his head and inhaled toxic gases that damaged his lungs and blood. He lapsed into a coma.
The race was restarted and Hunt won it. Ferrari were so traumatised by what had happened to Lauda they did not compete at the next race in Austria.
When Hunt won the Dutch Grand Prix, it meant he was only two points behind Lauda. It seemed now that he would coast to the world title.
But then Lauda made an astonishing comeback. His injuries were severe. His eyelids had been burned off and he could not blink.
He had lost parts of his ears, too. To this day, Lauda still wears a baseball hat in public to cover the scars.
With his face still so raw from his injuries that he had to wear bandages and a specially modified helmet, Lauda somehow finished fourth at the Italian Grand Prix.
By the 16th and final race of the season at the Fuji Speedway in Japan, Lauda led Hunt by three points.
It rained torrentially on the day of the race and several drivers suggested the race should be postponed.
It went ahead but on the third lap, Lauda drove his Ferrari into the pits and withdrew because he believed the conditions were too dangerous.
Hunt needed to finish fourth to become world champion but he got a puncture late in race and dropped to fifth place.
With two laps left, he overtook both Alan Jones and Clay Regazzoni to finish third and clinch the title.
CARS
COSY will be reliving the 1976 season by racing 3 of the most iconic cars ever to grace a circuit.
The Lotus 77
Mario Andretti was the number 1 driver for Lotus, finishing 6th in the 1976 season. Can you do any better?
The John Player Special sponsored Lotus 77 is a beautiful piece of machinery and even if you finish 6th, you'll finish in complete and utter style.
It may have only been by one point and the fact that Niki Lauda came back from being seriously hurt midway through the season; but the plucky Brit did win the 1976 F1 Championship.
You may not be able to emulate his legendary rock star image or have a blonde on each arm, but you have the opportunity to match him for driving skill and drive your McLaren to the top of the Championship
The Ferrari 312T2
Who doesn't love a Ferrari? Ferrari is Formula 1. Niki Lauda ended up 2nd in the '76 Championship which is a massive achievement considering the events of the season, but can you go one better and take the Championship?
Livery
You can either run with the supplied livery from Forza or make your own livery but please keep it in a 1970s styleThe circuits
The 4 circuits we'll be racing on were used in the 1976 seasonRace 1 - Long Beach 'Full Circuit' Race 1 & Race 2 16 laps. Race 3 25 laps. Pits 9 - 11

We'll be using the same point system as they used in 1976 with only one difference; P7 onwards will also receive 1pt.
P1 9pts. P2 6pts. P3 4pts. P4 3pts. P5 2pts. P6 1pt.
Assists & Settings
Damage: Fuel and Tyres
Tune: You will not be able to tune your car. Instead, download the tune 'CRC' created by 'Yello Cactus'. The reason is to ensure all drivers are racing purely on raw racing talent, a Marloboro cigarette and a blonde model called Susan and not on tunes.
Upgrades: the only upgrades allowed are Race brakes and Race tyre compound.
Driving Standards
We will obviously be racing Cosy so normal Cosy rules apply. Because of the nature of the cars we'll be racing, accidents may happen but if they do; follow the Cosy rules.
